Open the Simulator

Select Smart Formulas > Simulate from the menu. The simulator lets you preview the timesheet lines a Smart Formula will generate without importing a file or uploading anything to Xero.

Choose a Formula and Version

At the top of the simulator:
  • Smart Formula: Select the formula to test. Use the open icon beside the label to jump to the selected version in the editor.
  • Version: Select the draft or published version.
  • Start Day: Choose the first day of the calculation week.
  • Period: Choose weekly, fortnightly, 3-weekly, or 4-weekly.
  • Base Rate: Enter the rate to use when the formula needs one.
If no formulas are available, create or copy one from Smart Formulas > Configure. If you created a draft with Build with AI Assistant, open that draft in the simulator before publishing. Use anonymous sample shifts that match the assumptions shown during the AI interview, and confirm ordinary time, penalties, overtime, public holidays, breaks, and allowances all behave as expected.

Add Timesheet Lines

In Timesheet Lines, enter sample shifts:
  • Date: The date worked.
  • Start: The shift start time.
  • End: The shift end time.
  • Day type: Standard, Public Holiday, or Good Friday/Xmas.
Click Add line to add another sample shift.

Paste Multiple Lines

Click Paste to enter multiple sample rows at once. Use one row per line:
Supported day types are:
  • standard
  • public_holiday
  • good_friday_xmas

Run the Simulation

Click Run Simulation. UpSheets will show:
  • Generated lines: The timesheet lines that would be created.
  • Pay item: The pay item each generated line would use.
  • Hours: The calculated hours for each line.
  • Rate: The rate or multiple applied.
  • Message: Any calculation notes or warnings.

What to Check

Before publishing or assigning a formula, check:
  • Ordinary time is allocated to the expected pay items.
  • Daily and weekly overtime starts at the right thresholds.
  • Penalty rates apply on the correct days and times.
  • Public holiday lines appear only when expected.
  • Automatic breaks deduct the right amount.
  • Allowances appear only when their conditions are met.
  • The total hours match the result you expect.

After Simulation

If the output is correct, publish the formula so it can be assigned. If the output is wrong, go back to Configure Smart Formulas, update the rules, and run the simulation again. For AI-created drafts, treat the simulator result as the confirmation step before publishing — do not publish until the sample shifts match your expected pay items and hours.
