When to use this

Use the Minimum Shift Gap modifier when a different rate should apply because the employee did not have enough time between shifts. This differs from a broken shift allowance. A broken shift allowance adds an allowance line, while minimum shift gap changes the earnings rate for the affected shift.

Before You Start

Open or create the Smart Formula from Smart Formulas > Configure. Minimum shift gap rules can look at the previous shift in the same import file, including a shift from the prior day.

Example Setup

This example applies a different rate when the gap between the previous shift and the current shift is less than 10 hours. When Override lower overtime is on, excess hours also stay on the gap rate unless an overtime band has a higher multiple. Equal multiples stay on the gap rate. Turn the option off to keep the legacy behaviour (gap on ordinary hours only, then normal overtime). Existing rules without this option keep the legacy behaviour. New gap rules in Configure default the option on.

Worked Example

If an employee works Monday 14:00-22:00 and Tuesday 06:00-14:00: The Tuesday shift uses the gap rate because it starts 8 hours after the Monday shift ended.

Test the Example

Before publishing:
  1. Open Smart Formulas > Simulate.
  2. Add two shifts where the second shift starts less than 10 hours after the first shift ends.
  3. Add another pair with a gap of 10 hours or more.
  4. Click Run Simulation.
  5. Confirm only the short-gap shift uses the minimum shift gap rate.
